Fiber-based measurement of temporal intensity and phase profiles of an optical telecommunication pulse through self-phase modulation

2018

International audience; We propose and experimentally validate an all-fiber based approach to characterize the phase and intensity profiles of optical pulses. Based on three optical spectra affected by different levels of self-phase modulation, we were able to reconstruct the temporal details of pulses typical of optical telecommunications.

Optical frequency domain reflectometer distributed sensing using microstructured pure silica optical fibers under radiations

2016

International audience; We investigated the capability of micro-structured optical fibers to develop multi-functional, remotely-controlled, Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) distributed fiber based sensors to monitor temperature in nuclear power plants or high energy physics facilities. As pure-silica-core fibers are amongst the most radiation resistant waveguides, we characterized the response of two fibers with the same microstructure, one possessing a core elaborated with F300 Heraeus rod representing the state-of-the art for such fiber technology and one innovative sample based on pure sol-gel silica. Our measurements reveal that the Xray radiations do not affect the capaci…

<title>Control and measuring buses with amplitude fiber optical sensors</title>

2004

This paper presents controlling-measuring buses (linear and quasi-linear) using amplitude properties of fiber-optics and fiber-optical sensors of typical and/or special construction. It refers to linear sensors and commonly used measuring OTDR method, as wel as to realizations with linear binary sensors in transmission networks. Presented advantages and parameters of such measuring structures. Presented main area of application buses and practical realizations, regarding typical needs in industrial measurements, points out technical and economical advantages, in opposition to difficult and expensive (but more accurate) technology of measuring networks based on polarization and interfering m…

Nonlinear spectral compression in optical fiber: A new tool for processing degraded signals

2017

International audience; We propose two new applications of the spectral focusing by self-phase modulation that occurs in a nonlinear optical fiber. We numerically show the possibility of using nonlinear spectral compression to improve the optical signal to noise ratio and mitigate the amplitude jitter of the signal pulses. We also demonstrate experimentally that use of spectral focusing in a combination with an external sinusoidal phase modulation achieves efficient suppression of coherent spectral background.

Remote optical monitoring in remotely power assisted passive optical networks

2010

In this paper, the authors present the latest results on a simple and low cost method to achieve a dynamic and flexible network monitoring. By placing several fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) along the passive optical gigabit Ethernet infrastructure (GePON), the proposed modified optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is able to monitor the entire system by simply tuning its working wavelength. Furthermore, the optical network terminals (ONT), at the end users premises, have been interconnected to the trunk via an innovative cable able to both carry the optical signal as well as the power supply.
